MAPPING 2019 Ministero degli Esteri - Farnesina

Legacy – Farnesina Digital Art Experience

The Farnesina’s facade breathed that night. It pulsed with another life, made of pixels and visions, where stone dissolved into flows of light to tell something urgent, something necessary.

Fourteen digital art studios – including OOOPStudio – came together to share an imposing surface, a vertical stage that is also a diplomatic symbol, architecture of power, institutional memory. The video mapping was not a simple projection: it was an act of transformation. For a few hours, the palace ceased to be only itself and became a mirror of the world, of its wounds, of its metamorphoses.

Legacy – inheritance, bequest – is the title we chose. And it’s a heavy word, dense as the weight of an era. Because what are we truly leaving behind? What world do we hand over to those who will come after? Our work wanted to be a moving photograph of this passage: the planet changing, consuming itself, rebelling. The images we created don’t celebrate, don’t console. They question. They show the advancing ruin and at the same time the stubborn beauty of things, that which persists even in urgency.

The project was born within the Farnesina Digital Art Experience, an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to enhance Italian excellence in the field of digital art. In collaboration with the Embassies, Italian Cultural Institutes and ICE Agency, with the organization and artistic direction of Bright Festival led by Stefano Fake, the event brought artistic innovation to the heart of institutions, transforming diplomacy into visual narrative, the palace into living canvas.

Video mapping is a hybrid language: art, technology, architecture in dialogue. Each studio involved brought its own vision, its own expressive code, and together we wove a choral narrative. The facade became a digital ecosystem, a sequence of images that flowed, overlapped, shattered. A chorus of luminous voices questioning the present with the grammar of the future.

That night, the Farnesina was not merely a backdrop. It was an accomplice. It agreed to be traversed by uncomfortable questions, to become a porous surface where contradictions, urgencies, hopes could emerge. Because digital art, when authentic, doesn’t decorate: it excavates. It doesn’t embellish: it reveals.

Legacy was this: a moment when the institution opened its doors to critical imagination, where technology became poetic and beauty got its hands dirty with the present. An event that demonstrated how Italy can still be a place of experimentation, of expressive courage, of dialogue between tradition and innovation.

And when the lights went out, the facade returned to stone. But something, perhaps, remained in the air. A vibration. A luminous imprint. The echo of a necessary question.
